Last year, we celebrated the arrival of two new art installations at 400 Fairview’s Fairview Market Hall, created by Seattle local artists, Leo Shallat and Josh R. McDonald, on display through 2026.

Leo’s piece, titled “New Horizon,” is a vinyl adhesive with hand-applied variegated gold leaf detailing. Leo’s work can be described as abstract waves, with flowing brush patterns created using calligraphy tools, the medium he was originally trained in. Leo was tasked with creating a waveform for both the inside and outside of the south vestibule wall. He wanted motion and movement to carry through the two spaces and create a continuing pattern. While creating the installation, he was inspired by the Lake Union waterfront during sunrise. He was able to capture the essence of sunlight catching water, while bringing a sense of fluid movement to the vestibule wall.

Josh’s piece, titled “Harbingers,” brings his medium of textured oil paint and translates it to a vinyl adhesive. Josh’s work is inspired by his upbringing on a farm in Oregon, and he continues to be inspired by Pacific Northwest aesthetics and landscapes. He was inspired by the Market Hall architecture, and incorperated simliar archways in his piece. This is Josh’s first time creating a large scale instillation, and transferring his work to a different medium. His piece blends in seamlessly in the south vestibule, and adds vibrant dimension and texture to the space.

We are honored to be displaying Leo and Josh’s installations in 2026. Visit our north and south vestibule entrances, and see their amazing work on display through September!
